A new Broadway stage production based on the life and music of Carole King is scheduled to open in New York City in the spring of 2014.
Beautiful: The Carole King Musical will trace the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer's life from her childhood in Brooklyn, New York through her years as a songwriter at Manhattan's famed Brill Building during the 1960s -- where she composed hit songs for other artists alongside her first husband, Gerry Goffin -- and then on to her massive success as a solo artist with the album Tapestry.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the show will feature a soundtrack that includes a tunes penned by Carole and Goffin, as well as by the famous songwriting duo of Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil.
"What's so great about this for me is that musicals were a major influence on my songwriting," says Carole in a statement. "In fact, when Gerry and I first met, we made a bargain that I would write music for the Broadway show he wanted to write, if he wrote lyrics for my rock 'n' roll songs. The songs took off, and the show idea never came to fruition. Now…we've come full circle."
Prior to the planned Broadway run, preview performances of Beautiful will be scheduled this fall somewhere outside of New York City. Dates for that engagement and details about the musical's cast will be revealed soon.
